What are .ogg files?

Ogg files are music files which are very similar to MP3 files - they store encoded music. However, Ogg files use a more advanced compression technology, which results in much higher quality of audio, with a smaller size, which is ideal for use in phones which tend to have less than 1GB of memory available.

Ogg files are gaining in popularity and can be purchased from several major online shops, as well as being easy to convert from CDs.

Where can I get .ogg files?

To download or purchase music already in .ogg files, visit the Ogg Vorbis Music Links page.

To create .ogg files from CD's or other music formats, we recommend the Foobar2000 music player - simply play the tracks you wish to encode, then right-click and select 'Convert'. This software also requires the 'OggEnc' encoder to be installed.. A full list of encoders are available at the Ogg Vorbis Software Links page.

What is gapless playback?

Many albums contains tracks which seamlessly blend between each other - for example DJ mixes or albums such as Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. Many MP3 players introduce a small amount of silence between the end of one track and the start of the next which can interrupt the listening experience. The only solution to this is to create a single long MP3 file which is then hard to navigate.

Pocket Ogg has been designed to play audio in the highest quality possible on current handsets, including full support for gapless playback. It is possible to store an album of .ogg files and play them back exactly as the artist originally intended, with no silence between each track.

What is Quick Resume?

Quick Resume automatically remembers the playback position for tracks longer than 15 minutes – such as DJ mixes or audiobooks. When a different track is played or Pocket Ogg is exited, the playback position is remembered. When the track is played again, playback automatically starts from the previous position.

Pocket Ogg v1.1 now supports Quick Resume for the last 10 long tracks played, allowing different audiobooks to be resumed at their last played position.

What are .cue files?

Cue files are text files that store the position of tracks within a single longer track. An example would be an audiobook that is stored in a single .mp3 file, but has chapters stored in a separate .cue file. Pocket Ogg will automatically read the .cue file and allow the chapters to be browsed using the next or previous track keys. Pocket Ogg makes it appear as though each chapter is stored as a separate .mp3 file, even though all the chapters are really stored in a single file.

Pocket Ogg Trial

The trial version of Pocket Ogg is fully functional but will play for only 5 minutes at a time. Once the 5 minute trial is elapsed, the application must be closed and restarted in order to continue playback. Thee is no limit on the number of 5 minute sessions available.
